Show Time In Nundah

In the rural district known as Nundah, the 3rd Annual Agricultural Horticultural and Industrial Association show was held, on October 24th 1903, and provided a gala day for the visitors.

The venue was the State School, with the main buildings decorated with brightly coloured bunting and greenery. Crowds came by train from Brisbane, and many trap-loads of visitors from surrounding districts. A fine attendance, estimated to be 800 people in the afternoon and 400 at night, constituted a record that the district could be proud of.

His Excellency Sir Herbert Chermside, accompanied by Lieutenant Newton, ADC, together with the Minister for Agriculture, Hon D F Denham and Mrs Denham, arrived at 1pm formally declared the show open.

The president of the Association, Captain W Clatworthy, together with Messrs T Bridges, A L Petrie and Mrs Petrie. J D Campbell MLA, T Reid, President of the Chamber of Manufactures, and P J Leahey MLA, were present.

The Governor expressed his pleasure in assisting at this annual event and congratulated the district on the fine display of products.

In and about the school buildings were displays of the products of Nundah’s fields and gardens, pineapples, vegetable, flowers and fruit.

There was a very creditable display of work from children under 16. The school exhibited maps, copybooks and samplers shown with care.

Art and the housewives’ section also attracted attention. Outside were displays of fodder, poultry, pottery from the Virginia pottery works, Mr Hamilton’s sulkies, and F J Hill’s saddlery collection.

Sports and contests of an entertaining character followed outside: Winding the Cord, Potato race, Wood-chopping, Goat race, Double crosscut sawing contest and Horseshoe making,

In the evening, there were competitions supervised by Mr Muir, including hat-trimming for gentlemen, threading a needle by gentlemen, and nail driving by ladies. At 9.30pm, a very successful show closed.
