180 years of Nundah Cemetery

This February marks 180 years since the first recorded burial at Nundah Historic Cemetery—a baby named Mary Sophia Hermann, laid to rest in 1845.

To honour this milestone, the volunteer-run Friends of Nundah Historic Cemetery are compiling 180 stories about the people who rest there, creating a commemorative book that captures the lives, characters and contributions of those who shaped early Nundah.

The cemetery holds some fascinating tales. There’s the policeman who shot bushranger Riley, a governor’s freak accident with the cemetery gates that resulted in a lost leg, and the notorious ‘death by chocolate’ murder of Margaret Dorothy ‘Daisy’ Zillman. Then there’s the Darben family, who served as sextons and caretakers for decades, raising their family in the sexton’s house on the cemetery grounds.

The Friends of Nundah Historic Cemetery is an incorporated organisation that relies entirely on donations. They help clean sites, sweep, research, and tell the stories of those who came before us.

The completed book will be available for $50. For more information, contact Friends of Nundah Historic Cemetery.
